Sentences: From SIMPLE to LONG

If you want to speak and write good English, there is one thing you must know how to make.

What is it?

Not long spaghetti, but

loooooong (long / complex) sentences.

There are lots of ways to make loooooong sentences.
One of them is to start with simple sentences.

Yes, from SIMPLE  to LONG.

Read the following simple sentence.

SituationAt a presentation
This will make money (for our company).

The sentence is like a piece of cake, right?  Simple and easy.

Yet, you can make it complex by changing the first word of the sentence, the word ‘this’.

In other words, you can change it to, for example:

What I have just said

Yes, it is so easy that you just change ‘this’ into something like a sentence:

What I have just said will make money (for our company).

So it’s like magic, right?
You think the magic was too fast.  Don’t worry.  Read the following table:

SimpleThis will make money (for our company).
LongWhat I have just said will make money (for our company).

So the tip is:
Using ‘Wh’ words

__________________________________________________________________________

Want another example?

Look at the person in the picture.  You know who he is?

His name is Brad and he is our friend.

So a simple sentence will look like:

Brad is our friend.

But you can make it into a long sentence by using a Wh’ word.

Which Wh’ word will you pick?

As Brad is a person, I guess the choice is 'Who', right?

So the long sentence looks something like:

The one who is looking at you is our friend.

The following table may sum up how to make it:

Simple
Brad
is our friend.
Long
The one who is looking at you
is our friend.

However, there is one question you may ask.
What is it?

How many Wh’ words are there in English?

Can you make a guess?
I mean from the pic below:

Lucky you!

Only 11

But actually, it's 8 + 3.

Why?

Because 8 of them start with 'Wh':

The 8 'Wh' are:

What

When

Where

How

Who (Whom)

Whose

Why

The 3 are:

How / That / If

So by using other Wh’ words, you can talk about something big.

When you say somethingis important.
How you present your ideasis the key (to success).
